Chandravalli Caves Chitradurga with Guide ಚಂದ್ರವಳ್ಳಿ ಗುಹೆ ankali cave temples of Karnataka tourism

thus this is called as Garuda Naga Lingeshwara there is dust this is the way through which children come but we adults are coming through this this is 80 feet underground oh we are 80 feet underground is it? this was the conference hall our Kannadas first king Mayura Verma he created this cave we are 80 feet underground this is the place where he used to sit for secret conferences we are now at this place what all technology was available to our ancestors we can know from this cave and please do not say that this too was done by aliens this too was done by our ancestors only, they with hard work with their own hands have created this that credit we should not give to aliens this was definitely done solely by our ancestors feel so proud that this place is of such olden times this is a cave with so much of history now let us see this cave along with our Guide Shivanna Chandravalli cave from Chitradurga is around 4 kms away the location details is available in the description box for food at chitradurga i will give details of three restaurants those are also restaurants with some history after tasting the places that we liked are the ones we are showing today The people of chitradurga, through comment can inform about the other places of food restaurants or hotels good places for food you can inform it will help the tourist who come here vehicles can come up to this point this board mentions that from morning 6 am to evening 6 pm entry is permitted we were not aware, when we checked in internet it was mentioned that this place opens at 10 am that is why we came late, if not we would have come early when coming here it is best to come here early to avoid the heat this is a prehistoric place there is board about it they have stuck a poster on that board and made it impossible to read that board only for Park entry is from 6am to 6 pm to go to chandravalli cave at 10 it opens accordingly you can plan and come we have come to Hulegundi Siddeshwara temple here on this boulder and inscription is written to know what is written in this inscription Arenalli Dharmendra kumar, a historian, in one of his videos has explained this in his video in that video he not only reads what is written here but also explains the meaning of it i video link to it is available in the description the inscription that he speaks about is right here you can notice after winning the war against Pallavas the first, one and only, independent kannada Kingdom was built by the Kadambas, Mayura Verma the place where he raised his army is this, in that Davalappa gudda is where Mayura verma built his army if you ask, what the proof you have for this? see the boulder near that Siddeshwara temple on that boulder is this inscription available what does that inscription read? Kadambanam Mayura Vermanam thathakam drudamkutham, abhiroopam, rachithava vanasakam, sthapithva upanachama if you see here notice the sun and moon marking, under it are three lines inscription written there, all that is getting erased now it is not clearly visible to us, how much of it if will appear through camera, i am not sure how long this will survive i dont know temple is locked at present nothing is visible right? looks like construction materials Kannadas first and foremost king Mayura Verma built this lake on that hill there he builds his army when i had come here few years ago

the steps here were not like this during my previous visit i had clicked few pictures i will keep showing those pictures as well between the video the white mark on those boulders, those are Jyothiraj famously known as Kothiraj Spiderman of India, those are the marks of his climbing you can see how nicely he has climbed up you can see the olden days water tank this is placed here so that before entering temple to wash you feet with water this is called as Bane under neath this boulder is the Pancha lingeshwara now it has become Nava lingeshwara after one swamiji came here. in which year did he come here? in 15th century the swamiji came from Ankali He installed four lingas here later when pandavas came here during their exile, they installed fife more linga here although there are nine lingas here, yet it is known as Panchalingeshwara you can go inside and see here pandavas installed Pancha lingas hence it is known as Pancha lingeshwara pandavas were five people so in their memory each one installed one statue this side there are four lingas some say this was installed by by but for me this was installed by this was installed by pandavas this was installed by the swamijis in 15th century these five lingas were installed by the pandavas there is archakaru here here there are tourism guides they are the ones who light the lamp here as well along with that they guide us too these four lingas swamiji came here in 15th century and installed here the inscription of the temple is also here this temple is pancha lingeshwara in Dwaparayuga when padavas came here they installed these five lingas here Bhima, arjuna, nakula sahadeva Dharmaraya even now there are 9 lingas in here a swamijij who came here from Ankali installed four lingas here totally there are nine lingas yet it is known as pancha linga this is known as Chandravalli thota(Garden) or Chandravalli cave this was created during the times of our Kannadas first ruler Mayura verma he lost in a battle against the pallavas gets disappointed and gives another try here this was done for their safety he built his army here on a near by hill named as Davalappana gudda this is the first enterance known as Nandi door why they created nandi door is because he sits calmly in front of shiva that is why he come slowly as a a mark of slow movement this door is installed to get down there are seven steps all those seven steps are of varing size, one is small the other is bid, the next is small and so on why they have made such is because when attacking, enemies come will keep their legs in similar style and come this is made such with an intention of making the enemies to fall this is where the swamji used to sit and give his sermon in 15th century this was created around 4th century back then this was done in 15th century a swamiji came known as Pardeshiappa

when he came here insdie what ever is there now he got all that improvised initially our ancestors used to build a big house, then we used to get it renovated Similar to that when that swamji came here, he made cot to sleep on, drawing room, treasury all that you can see inside, he has done it as his home it is uneven here have to be careful when getting down nandi entrance one has to bend and enter these steps have difference these seven steps, yes observe this it is different from one and another come down height , width all are different of each of the steps this is the place where the soldier can sit and keep watch to keep track of who is coming in he will be seated in dark and the person entering will come from well light area who ever come s he will get to know but person coming from outside will not know that is why this is known as the secret way see now from here you can see who is entering who is here they cannot see by the time they reach here the one inside can attack them then go inside and escape look above there are slabs and beams all this is created under one big boulder this is second door known as Gaja dwara on top is the Ganesha and below is the Poornakumba Kalasa for starting any good work one does pooje to vinayaka and then do installation on Poornakumba kalasa symbolic to that this has been created, on the rear side there are you can see few designs of elephants that is why this is known as Gaja dwara little ahead the place is a little light suddenly see the natural boulder this is the one single boulder that you will see here where is the elephant oh elephant is here, above we saw the slab and beam previously due to these elephants this is called as Gaja dwara have you seen this place before? yes, then too we had taken a guide this is also known as Ankali Mutta Chandravalli cave, Ankali mutta refers to a swami who would have Belagavi districts Gokaks Ankali swamiji would have come here his name was Paradeshappa hence this cave is also known as Paradeshappana cave or Ankali muttu it is famously known as why it is called chandravalli? because our kannadas first ruler Mayura Verma in his time this was created and hence the name was channdanavathi or chandanavati thus it become chandanavalli cave or chandavalli tota here if you came by the parking lot way on either side of that parking lot it is said that there were Gardens there now all that garden has been destroyed. now only the lake and the cave is available to be see this is a samadhi or Mausoleum but also known as Dhyana pita this is the place where all the worship articles are placed from here the shivalinga is visible these are for placing the lamps like the way we are using torch here back then they used to use the sticks tied with cloth and fire lit to it for light there is a room there in those days the pooje articles where kept there there is no pooje here is it? no one lights the lamp here is it? no sir this is the place where the worship articles where kept the room is up till there these all are for placing the lamps

come along Babu if not you will lose your way there are bats this is the bathroom they used to take bath here and go there for performing the pooje Psrdeshappa Swamiji in those days the rain water which used to fall used to come down through this drain way and get collected in this tank here in free time they would stock water from the Lake this is the place where the swamji would sit for his bath the bath water would go through his drainage notice the hole this was the drainage it flows outside after bath this is the place for resting it is like a cot for resting here you can see there are three doors on here, one here and one here in those days if there was war if in case of defeat, then the Kings safety was fur most, thousands of soldiers even if captured, the King could not be captured only if the King was captured only then the kingdom would be captured that is why this is known as Secret passage this route has been close by ASI, in those days this would connect to Baba budanagiri, uchengidurga Srirangaptana, they used to go till there, but there was no opening there we have to go here and then come came the same way ASI have closed it observe the roof now a days we use iron and all for concrete they have used stones for plastering come let us go and see ahead this was closed but again they opened it this route is closed previously we used to show this and then we used to head back from here we used to go out locals would come from here, we would the tourist from the other side i would be dark crowded and difficult, so they closed this and made this small opening where does this go to? outside notice the roof here these are small stones joined together all this was done during those olden days nothing has been done now all this is of those times now a days engineers do all sorts of circus yet give no guarantee but see here how strong these are that to this has been there for so many centuries now it is 1620 years old you can say it is older than that this is drawing hall painting hall this looks like a stand now we have cement ,then there was no cement plastering means lime, sand, brick pieces etc all these they made into a fine mix and then used notice its like ribbon. climbers and figures this is natural painting done on the boulder then there were no ready made colours, the colour used to be prepared from the natural ingredients available around a place to keep the paint brush for that this stand was created, thus this is known as the drawing or painting hall we can the ancient painting here touch and see this , this is made of mud on that they have done the plastering touch and see, it will be cold

it is so smooth this is like porcelain or granite it will be cold as inside these boulders it does not get heated mud is cold shall we move ahead? yes one more door see how they plan to escape in case of emergency this is like a window i will show the light there you can see the door there, yes those coming from there can be seen from this window then they would escape from here they see here we can see the door this is the same door through which we came known as Gajadwara we have not gone very far, we are still in the same surrounding, this is the peep hole we have been going in circle that is it from this window it is visible as to who is coming there after they can escape this way we have not gone is it? this is the same way through which we came this is like a circle this appears like a tub form this is the palanquin, similar to the ones used for the gods during festivals here the swami used to be seated and worshipped this place above is the swami’s bed room this is the direction the door has been closed now lying down he could observe who was entering or leaving now a days the way we have window to see who has come and then only do we open door, similarly lying down here he could see from the window what has changed here is that ASI has closed this door carvings notice the natural paintings notice the various paintings done here natural paints this is the dyana peeta or the meditation platform there were statues of shiva, parvathi all statues have been destroyed in some odd statue they would have found few pieces of precious stones all statues have been destroyed by the locals all these are not carvings its all plastering these are shining, the plastering is shiny there are bats here bats this side he would place his head, this side would be the leg and through that window he could notice who was entering or leaving yes this side head that side leg the we saw previously, that he could see and to come in here, no one could come in without his permission no entry without permission this is the third door , known as Simha door or lion door if the enemy succeeds the two doors reaching the third door is equivalent to getting into the mouth of the lion if you go this way or that both will go to the same route but this way we only take school kids this way we will have to go slowly and carefully we need to go slowly by sitting down come one by one school kids are very eager they will come the soldiers would come here is a arch these all for keeping the lamps

wait babu, come carefully one by one ok come now careful here is an arch as well watch out for the arch we come come bending such which way do the kids come from will show you that way later kids would come through this way they will come easily this way we will try to go by the kids route once this is the kids route, they can go a little easily, as they are little we have to bend and go, can we stand up there sit down and come those who are a little tall will have to struggle more wait babu this is the kids route, but we adults are coming through it children would come this way what is this as space was available they have built it are at 80 feet depth, now we are at the gurukula kids are gathered here elders come from there kids like us come from here now we are 80 feet underground this is the conference hall, meeting hall all kings used to come together and hold meeting here if meetings were done above then all would know who said what jealousy, aggression would happen for that reason the secret meetings were done here when meeting is done here, one can only hear the voice, no one could be seen now if we turn off the torch light, neither face we will not be able to see anything shall we turn it off now camera is facing my direction it is so dark that nothing is visible how they used to come in here is outside there would be a soldier, they would blind fold the eyes and so that no one would know the way to this place only after all where sent out of the meeting was the lamp lit because no body should know the route by which they came in or by which they went out this is the secret conference hall 80 feet underground these all are for keeping the lamps only after all left then the lamps were lit there are all the seats in which kings used to sit for conference almost as he was here for 10 to 15 years so much improvement was done here all this was done during the swamijis times the lake was constructed it was called as Thatak that lake was created during Mayura Verma time do people come here on Saturdays and Sundays

grains storage area we are inside the granary the way we put money in the temple hundi in those days when seeing swamy, from the crops grown they would make a contribution from their harvest here the grain generally given in maximum quantity is stored in here there are three other boxes on that side what ever grains were grown back then, the one in large quantity was stored here the once of lesser quantity were stored in other places that side there are three such lesser quantities were stored here this is Basava temple for greed of treasure, treasure hunters have destroyed it next to that boulder you can see the statue there on your way out you can see it this is Basavannas temple the statue which was in that mantapa that statue is in this state this is the destruction done by the treasure hunters Treasure theifs this work of treasure thieves this is nandi head is not there a dilapidated nandi Kitchen dome was there back then see this dome the hole in it appears like a light even from this side it looks like a light yes it looks like a light this side was the forest there are bats here bats are there can make out from the smell the guest who used to come visit the swamy were given this room to rest, this is the guest room this was the kitchen for the guests this is the spice grinding stone those having these kind of edges were used for grinding spicy things so that the spicy paste would not go out of the grinding area if its is flat then its used for pounding grains this is the chimney for the cooking area so that smoke would clear out observe and come all entrances had doors these are the hinges all were double door there are the places to keep lamps for all doors notice the hinges

we came from here this is the kitchen that room over there is the store room this is bathroom for washing purpose there they used to cook cooking area here too there is chimney for smoke to go out this is store room here is a arch made using key stones the gaps have been given for circulation and ventilation and for light see for such big stones how it is placed it is all piece stones they way now we put tiles similar to that so much technology for those days this is where the soldiers used to sit it was a secret watch place to see what is cooking:) to see enemy movement under this boulder we had gone previously the cave we went inside was under this boulder this is a single boulder this naturally has cracked due to lightning no sure but it has cracked imagine in front is the Shivalinga the one behind it is the Nagara Snake with its hood open is you observed it from rear side it appears in the shape of Garuda hence it is known as garuda naga lingeshwara in one stone we can see three shapes Garudanaga lingeshwara swamy used to sit there and tell pravachana garuda no one has carved this you can climb over here and go there we will see ans come we have to go this way swamy used to come this way climb up there and tell pravachana there
